Smell gas? Get out, then call. We dispatch gas-certified plumbers 7 days a week to locate and repair gas leaks, test the system, and restore safe operation.
New to Pro Kirkland Plumber? Here's how our service works.
Natural gas is odorless — the rotten-egg smell (mercaptan) is added by PSE so you can detect it. But you can only smell a gas leak when the concentration reaches a detectable level; by then, the leak may have been building for hours. Natural gas is explosive at concentrations of 5% to 15% in air. A spark from a light switch, appliance motor, or static electricity can ignite it. In addition, a gas leak in an enclosed space displaces oxygen, creating an asphyxiation risk. Gas line issues can occur at the meter, supply line, flexible connectors to appliances, gas valve bodies, and threaded fittings that loosen from thermal cycling.
Our gas-certified plumber arrives with a combustible gas detector and systematically checks the gas system — meter, supply line, flexible connectors, appliance valves, and threaded fittings — to locate the source. Small leaks at threaded fittings are repaired by re-sealing with gas-rated pipe compound. Damaged flexible connectors are replaced. Corroded or damaged supply line sections are cut out and replaced. After the repair, the entire system is pressure-tested to confirm no remaining leaks. If PSE shut off your gas, we coordinate with them for reconnection. All work meets current Washington State fuel gas code.
If you smell gas: leave the building immediately. Don't flip switches or use electronics. Call us from a safe distance outside.
A gas-certified plumber is dispatched with combustible gas detection equipment. If the smell is strong, we also recommend calling PSE's gas emergency line.
The plumber systematically checks the gas system from the meter to each appliance, using a gas detector to pinpoint the exact source of the leak.
The leak is repaired — re-sealed fitting, replaced connector, or pipe repair. The entire system is then pressure-tested to confirm no remaining leaks before gas is restored.
Gas is turned back on, all appliances are checked for proper ignition and operation, and the system is confirmed safe.
Gas leaks are life-threatening emergencies. We dispatch as a priority 7 days a week, 6 AM to 11 PM. Call from a safe distance outside — if it's outside those hours and the smell is strong, call 911.
