The water service line from the meter to your home is typically ¾" to 1" copper, galvanized steel, or polyethylene. Each material has a failure mode. Copper: pinhole leaks from electrolysis or water chemistry, typically after 30 to 50 years. Galvanized: internal corrosion that narrows the pipe and weakens the walls, eventually perforating. Polyethylene: joint failures at compression fittings, or damage from shifting soil on Kirkland's hilly terrain. Tree roots can also damage the main line by pushing against or growing around it. In all cases, the break is underground — between 18 and 48 inches deep — and you can't see it until water surfaces.
We start by shutting off the water at the meter or at the curb stop (if accessible) to stop the flooding. We then locate the break — often visible as a saturated area, sunken ground, or water surfacing in the yard. Excavation exposes the damaged section. For spot repairs, we cut out the failed section and install a repair coupling or splice fitting. If the entire main line is deteriorated (common with galvanized lines), we recommend full replacement with modern materials. We backfill, compact, and restore the excavation area, and coordinate with the city water utility if the break is near the meter or in the right-of-way.
We guide you through shutting off the water at the meter if possible. The plumber confirms shutoff on arrival and assesses the break location.
We locate the break using surface signs and excavate to expose the damaged section. Utility locates (811) are called to mark other underground utilities.
The damaged section is cut out and replaced. For systemic deterioration, we replace the entire service line from the meter to the house.
The water supply is restored, the repaired line is tested for leaks, and the excavation is backfilled, compacted, and graded.
We handle the City of Kirkland permit for main line work and coordinate with the water utility if the break involves the meter or right-of-way.
